What is the most reliable E-bike?

Main Post:

I'm looking to buy an E-bike for everyday use from work across towwn. I'm not familiar with the different brands and what I should look out for when making a purchase. But I know cars a lot better. And I know reliability is the key. I don't need any unnecessary ad ons or garbage cheap quality, just something that works and won't break down, preferably a foldable E-bike. Is there a Toyota of the E-bike world?

Top Comment: Shimano or Bosch motor

E-bike recommendations

So I’ve been thinking about getting the hjm Toury for awhile and every YouTube video I’ve seen review them well but I see some people on Reddit say hjm isn’t a reputable company what are your thoughts on hjm and should I go for lectric instead? I need a bike that’ll get me up steep hills and about a 30 mile round trip commute budget is $2500

Top Comment: Check out Gazelle, trek, and giant to see what they have. Here is a Gazelle that would make a great commuter for around $3k. https://www.gazellebikes.com/en-us/gazelle-arroyo-c8-hmb-elite#pim_itemcolorcodeonergb=75%2C%2079%2C%2084&pim_itemgenderframe=Low-step&color=color-cloud-grey&frame=frame-low I would advise you get a bike with a reputable drive train (shimano, Bosch) and a belt drive or uses an internal gear hub so you can encase the chain. With the kind of miles you want to put on the bike, getting rid of the derailer will make your like a lot easier. I have a priority current that I have been riding for 3 years. It uses a Chinese made, priority branded motor. With over 8,000 miles, I have had to replace the motor 3 times. It’s quick and easy and priority has stellar customer service that covered the motors even out of warranty, but 3 motors in such little distance is a bit of an issue. All of this new inexpensive e-bikes use really cheap components that will break and some of the companies are a hassle to get parts for. On top of that more and more cities are putting in restrictions on what batteries will be allowed to charge in buildings due to an increase in battery fires. With name brand drive trains, you won’t have issues.

Electric bike vs regular bike

Main Post:

So idk if I'll be able to get a license and car but I'm gonna try. Earlier today I thought of looking up electric bikes on YouTube. Tomorrow I have an interview at this place that's kinda far by walking but I can get there by bus. Based on what I was told for the end time, I thought it would be a good idea to look into bikes. Has anyone ever used an electric bike? Or what's a really good regular bike? I know there are mountain bikes but that's the only one I kinda know of 😂 I wanna get something that can handle possible rough streets and sidewalks. It's not a really bad area where I'm at but you know, I just want something that's gonna be solid and sturdy.

And I'm 33 but kinda embarrassed to ride one, not that I don't know how but you really don't see a lot of young black women riding bikes here. Some mostly have cars but I'm sure a lot think they're too cute to ride a bike, not me, it's just kinda uncommon that's all

Top Comment: I’m new to biking so I don’t have much advice but I just wanted to drop in and say don’t be embarrassed! I’m 32 and I commute to work on a bike. It’s amazing.

Beginner E-Bike - OVERWHELMED

Main Post:

Hi Guys!

I am purchasing an e-bike for my fiance as a surprise and I plan on getting one for myself too. I don't want to spend more than $2,000 for each bike. We typically plan on biking around the neighborhood and for commuting purposes. We don't cycle on the weekends or anything -- this is purely for recreational purposes.

Whenever I google "best ebike" I get hit with about 27 different pages filled with 100s of options. Any advice of like 3 bikes I should really seriously consider?? HELP MEEE!!!

Top Comment: I'd look at these manufacturers: RadPower Juiced Bikes Ride1Up Lectric Each of these manufacturers make a number of different bikes. RadPower is the largest online retailer of ebikes in the US, so if you're looking for a safe bet, that's a good place to start. They have a number of different models that suit different needs.

Electric bike recommendations?

Main Post:

Looking to buy an electric bike. There are so many brands I’ve never heard of; anyone have a brand that has treated them well?

Top Comment: Honestly, I think the absolute best you can do is a mid-drive kit installed on a decent and comfortable-for-you mountain bike or hybrid bike, specifically the Bafang BBSHD or BBS02, and I would recommend Luna Cycle as a source for these, and for very good customer service. These Bafang kits are well known and well tested systems, and very reliable, good for 10k-20k+ miles easily, and easy to install and service. I did a ton of research on ebikes first to settle on this. I installed a BBS02 (750watt) onto my old hardtail mountain bike a few months ago, with a 17.5amp-hour Li-ion battery (also from Luna, installed on the downtube), and it is a fantastic setup. You don't want to cheap out on the battery pack, but use a known quality source with assured non-counterfeit cells (which are a real problem these days), for long life and to prevent fire risk. The system is programmable, can do 30+ miles on throttle only, or 50+ miles with mid-level pedal assist, can go 28-30mph (if you really want to). Pedal assist can be set at whatever speed or level you want to set it, plus the best part of mid-drive motors is you still have all your rear gears to use for more efficient starts or for getting up steep hills. If you have no interest in building it yourself, many local bike shops will install it for you for maybe $100, and it only takes an hour or two, likely shorter if they're experienced at it. This way you can also find the donor bike that best fits you (I would suggest "used but nice"), since this kit can go on most bikes. This kind of setup will blow any prebuilt bike out of the water with performance vs cost, and likely cost less than half as much all in. Mine was $1200 all total (well, +$300 for the donor bike I already owned), while the same performance level in a prebuilt would be easy $3k-$5k+. $1200 spent on a prebuilt will get you rather crappy specs. Plus, many prebuilt bikes require custom parts, especially the battery pack, which will surely need replacing in a few years, and who knows what companies will even still exist by then, with hundreds of makers popping up these days. With the kit approach, you can always choose any new battery system, and the bike itself is simple to repair if needed. Feel free to message me if you want to ask more about these, there are a lot of finer points to be aware of.

For those who went to an eBike, did it "ruin" regular bikes for you?

Main Post:

I am not against eBikes but I have a fast car and when I got a bike, there was something appealing to me about the fact that I was the engine and I was propelling it forward instead of some kind of motor.
So getting up big hills and whatnot is a feeling of personal pride and accomplishment.

That said, I am also envious when I am gassed and trying to lug myself up a hill and I see somebody pass me on an eBike and disappear into the distance like I was going backwards. And I am reading that for exercise purposes the eBike may be better, because it allows you to ride further and longer since it's more enjoyable.

But then is it going to ruin the feeling of the bikes I already have now?

What're your thoughts?

Top Comment: No, it’s just a different kind of bike that I ride for different purposes. I still enjoy my regular bike.
